CHAMBERSBURG >> A local veteran and participants in the 7th Annual PA Hero Walk were honored Saturday.

Michael Bucci thought he was at the AMVETS in Chambersburg to celebrate participants in the 320-mile Hero Walk from Philadelphia to Pittsburgh, but was surprised to receive citations from the Chambersburg Borough and Pennsylvania House of Representatives.
"I was honored and amazed at the same time," he said.

Bucci served in four tours in Iraq and one Afghanistan. He spent a total of 66 months in a combat zone. A 1993 graduate of Chambersburg Area High School, Bucci was awarded three Purple Hearts during his 17-year military career.

Franklin County Commissioners Rob Thomas and David Keller announced that, in recognition of Bucci's service, Chambersburg Mayor Darren Brown had declared June 20 as Mike Bucci Day.
State Rep. Rob Kauffman, R-Chambersburg, was on hand for the presentation and praised the work of the walkers and those who support veterans. Al Pulice, in conjunction with the Kiski Valley Veterans and Patriots Association, founded and created the PA Hero Walk in 2009 to raise money for veterans in Pennsylvania.

The group had walked from Gettysburg on Saturday to Chambersburg where they spent the night at the Clarion Hotel, with their hotel fee paid by the local AMVETS.
"It is always an honor to be in the presence of people that are making it happen," Kauffman said. "Thank you for what you are doing."
Bucci's father, Fred Bucci, who has lived in Chambersburg since 1986, was the organizer for this leg of the Hero Wlk.

The group was also recognized by the Borough of Chambersburg on Saturday. Since Pulice has started the walk he has raised more than $1 million for veterans.
Despite the sore legs, Pulice said the time between stopping points goes fast and the group of walkers can't wait to meet people at each stopping point.

"When we get to some of our stopping points, where there are 300 people waiting for us, it gets really emotional," he said. The walk takes place over a period of 14 days, ending on July 4 in Pittsburgh.

VA News Release

Statement by VA Secretary David J. Shulkin - Passage of the Forever GI Bill

Statement by VA Secretary David J. Shulkin -  Passage of the Forever GI Bill
Congress has spoken with a strong voice in support of our Veterans this afternoon.  The Forever GI Bill expands the success our Veterans have had with the GI Bill providing opportunities that otherwise would not be possible.

In particular, it restores benefits to Veterans who were impacted by school closures since 2015 and has special benefits for our reservists, surviving dependents, and Purple Heart recipients.  This nation is stronger when our Veterans are studying and working next to their civilian counterparts.  Passage of this bill is a win for Veterans and their families.
